The JunctionBox is a utlilty guitar pedal that allows for rerouting of analog signals on the fly. Instead of reordering effect pedals with cables and rearranging a pedalboard, the effect pedals can all be plugged into the JunctionBox and reordered using a simple button system. This not only makes experimenting with new sounds and tones easier, but it also allows for complete tone-switching during live performances.
In March of 2023, two musicians approached me with several ideas for guitar pedals that they wanted to create. After speaking with them a few times, we decided to prototype the JunctionBox, a guitar pedal that could change the order of effects in a signal chain. The musicians provided me with a general overview of the functionality of the pedal and a sketch of its design. From this point, I began the prototyping stage.
My first step in the design process for the JunctionBox was researching components for every aspect of the device. I found several solutions to switch analog signals, and decided to use the CD4061 analog multiplexer. I also decided to use the ATmega328p microcontroller since it is easy to prototype with. After choosing the main components, I began to build the device on breadboards and test that the different parts work together as expected. I used my guitar and a few effect pedals that I had to test the button and LED system, and make sure that the audio was high quality. Once I felt that the device performing to my expectations, I created a schematic and PCB layout using Cadence. Several revisions were made to the PCB, and finally I ended up with the final result.
The JunctionBox is still in the relatively early stages of development. A working prototype has been built and is in the testing process, but might require further improvements or changes. An important part of my design process involves user experience research and feedback, so I plan to make several more copies of the prototype and give them to as many potential users as possible. As the designer of a new product, I need to know if the controls are intuitive. A first-time user should be able to figure out how to use the JunctionBox's signal routing system quickly and easily with the button and feedback LED system.
In the near future, I hope to be entering the final stages of the development process and getting ready to showcase the final product. There are several guitar pedal expos taking place in various locations throughout the year and I plan on booking a table to generate interest with new potential customers.
